Tung Nam Lou Art Hotel
First Impressions
Walking into Tung Nam Lou Art Hotel on Portland Street, you immediately notice this isn’t your typical budget hotel. The lobby has this interesting blend of contemporary art pieces and traditional touches that somehow works — I mean, it’s a three-star place, but they’ve clearly put thought into the design. The staff at reception were genuinely helpful when I checked in, not just going through the motions like you sometimes get in this price range.
Location & Neighborhood
Honestly, the location is probably the hotel’s biggest selling point. You’re right in the heart of Yau Ma Tei, which puts you walking distance from the Temple Street Night Market — and trust me, that’s where you want to be in the evenings. The MTR station is maybe a three-minute walk, so getting around Hong Kong is incredibly easy. What I really appreciated was being close to the Jade Market and all those local dim sum places that tourists usually miss. The area has this authentic Hong Kong vibe that’s getting harder to find in other parts of the city.
The Room Experience
The room was smaller than what you’d expect back home, but that’s Hong Kong for you — space is premium everywhere. What surprised me was how well they’d used every inch. The bed was comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep, and the air conditioning worked perfectly (which matters more than you’d think in Hong Kong’s humidity). The bathroom was compact but functional, with decent water pressure in the shower. There’s free Wi-Fi that actually works reliably, which isn’t always a given in older buildings.
Practical Considerations
One thing to know upfront — there’s no restaurant on-site, but honestly, that’s not a problem in this neighborhood. You’ve got incredible street food and local eateries literally steps away. The hotel doesn’t have parking either, but you really don’t need a car in this part of Hong Kong anyway. The front desk can help arrange airport transfers, and they’re pretty knowledgeable about local attractions. I found them particularly helpful with directions to places that aren’t in the typical guidebooks.
Why Guests Love It
What really makes this place work is the combination of location and value. You’re paying three-star prices but staying in what feels like one of the best neighborhoods in the city. The art theme isn’t just marketing — there are actually interesting pieces throughout the hotel that give it character. It’s clean, the staff care about what they’re doing, and you’re perfectly positioned to experience the real Hong Kong. For couples especially, the location seems to hit the sweet spot — close enough to major attractions but in a neighborhood that feels authentically local. You know what? Sometimes the best travel experiences come from places that don’t try too hard, and this hotel gets that balance right.
Locals suggest to book apartments in Hong Kong around Tai Ping Shan for indie coffee, herbal apothecaries, and mural-lined stairways.
