First Impressions

Walking into YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel feels like stepping into a piece of Hong Kong’s living history — and I mean that in the best possible way. This three-star hostel occupies an actual former public housing block in Shek Kip Mei, which gives it an authenticity you just won’t find in the glossy hotels down in Central. The building itself tells a story, and honestly, that’s half the charm right there. You’re not just staying somewhere; you’re experiencing how real Hong Kong residents have lived for decades.

Location & Neighborhood

Sham Shui Po isn’t where most tourists end up, but that’s exactly why couples seem to love it here — they rated the location 8.6 for good reason. You’re in one of Hong Kong’s most genuine neighborhoods, where street food stalls outnumber Starbucks and you can actually afford to eat well. The Sham Shui Po MTR station is close enough that getting to Tsim Sha Tsui or Central is no problem, but you’ll find yourself wanting to explore locally. The area’s famous for its electronics markets and fabric shops, plus some of the city’s best cheap eats are literally on your doorstep.

The Rooms

The accommodations at YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel are clean, functional, and surprisingly comfortable for what you’re paying. Don’t expect spacious — this is Hong Kong, after all — but the rooms are thoughtfully designed to make the most of every square foot. The bunk beds are sturdy (no midnight creaking), and there’s actually decent privacy even in the shared rooms. What impressed me most was how quiet it stays at night, considering you’re in a pretty dense residential area. The bathrooms are shared but well-maintained, and there’s always hot water when you need it.

Daily Life & Amenities

There’s a communal kitchen that’s actually usable — not just for show like some hostels — and a common area where you’ll end up chatting with other travelers without it feeling forced. The staff here know their stuff about getting around Hong Kong, and they’re genuinely helpful rather than just polite. You know what really stood out? The laundry facilities actually work properly, which sounds minor until you’re three weeks into a trip and desperately need clean clothes. The whole place has this relaxed vibe where solo travelers feel comfortable and groups don’t take over completely.

Why Guests Love It

The repeat guest rate here is higher than most other properties, and after staying here, I totally get why. It’s not trying to be something it’s not — just a solid, authentic place to sleep in one of Hong Kong’s most interesting neighborhoods. The value is incredible for what you get, especially considering how expensive accommodation can be in this city. Plus, there’s something special about staying in a place that’s actually part of the community rather than just dropped into it. You’ll leave knowing a side of Hong Kong that most visitors never see, and honestly, that’s worth more than fancy amenities any day.

To book hotel in Hong Kong for Symphony of Lights shows, travelers lock harbor-view suites to pair junk boat cruises with rooftop dim sum tastings.
